Interface's Mission Zero Progress
The Interface journey toward Mission Zero™ is made more focused by measuring our progress. How far have we come? Where are we moving quickly? Where are we lagging behind? What does this tell us?
EcoMetrics™ is the term Ray Anderson coined to describe the measurement system we put in place in 1994 that would monitor our results. The EcoMetrics system is designed to quantify our “metabolism,” or the mass and energy flow through the company’s operations. In other words, EcoMetrics assesses how much we take in, in terms of materials and energy, and what comes out, in the forms of products and waste.
Our key EcoMetrics indicators include waste reduction, renewable energy, carbon emissions, water and energy usage, and percentage of recycled and biobased materials in products. Each Interface plant tracks and reports on hundreds of metrics quarterly. These results are rolled up on a company-wide level and reported annually on our website to allow our stakeholders to track our progress.
Interface also measures its impact on people – our associates and the communities we serve. SocioMetrics™ collects data in several key areas that measure our social capital or investment in people as a company. This takes into account the time and investments we make in sensitizing and educating others on sustainability, in philanthropy and in volunteering.
This section gives you an overview of Interface’s EcoMetrics, both on a consolidated basis and by facility, as well as our SocioMetrics.
